Adopt a Highway

In October, 1996, St. James assumed the responsibility of cleaning up a 0.8-mile stretch of 14th Street West in south Rock Island. This activity occurs four times a year. It usually takes about an hour to do the job. The four dates for picking up trash in 2020 are

   2:00 pm, Fri., May 1
   8:45 am, Sat., Jul. 11
   1:00 pm, Mon., Sep. 14
   2:00 pm, Fri., Nov. 6

If you would like to join in the fun and help beautify this well-traveled street, meet at the eastern parking lot of Mel McKay park in South Rock Island. This lot is only accessible from 14th Street West. At the park we receive instructions, put on a safety vest, grab a trash bag and pick up a grabber. Please wear sturdy shoes. Safety vests, gloves, garbage bags, grabbers, and garbage bag holders will be provided. We will maintain the recommended 6 foot physical separation.
