Adopt a Highway

In October, 1996, St. James assumed the responsibility of cleaning up a 0.8-mile stretch of 14th Street West in south Rock Island. This activity occurs four times a year. It usually takes about an hour to do the job. The four dates for picking up trash in 2018 are

   8:45 am, Sat., May 5
   8:45 am, Sat., Jul. 14
   8:45 am, Sat., Sep. 8
   2:00 pm, Fri., Nov. 2

If you would like to join in the fun and help beautify this well-traveled street, meet at the eastern parking lot of Mel McKay park in South Rock Island. This lot is only accessible from 14th Street West. At the park we divide into two-person teams, receive instructions, put on a safety vest, and grab a trash bag. Please wear sturdy shoes. Safety vests, gloves, garbage bags, grabbers, and garbage bag holders will be provided.

Hunger Education, Advocacy and Response Team (HEART)

ServingMembers of the HEART serve four suppers each year at Christian Care in Rock Island. They also organize annual participation in the Churches United CROP Walk and weekly donations of food items to a nearby food pantry.  Soup, bread, and beverage are served at the annual Souper Bowl of Caring with proceeds from a free will offering going to the ELCA Hunger Drive and a local food pantry. New HEART members are always welcome!
