Adopt-A-Highway Program

In October, 1996, St. James assumed the responsibility of cleaning up a 0.8-mile stretch of 14th St. West in south Rock Island. This activity occurs four times a year.  It usually takes about an hour to do the job.  The four dates for picking up trash and recyclable items in 2009 are currently planned to be the following Saturdays: May 2, July 11, September 12 and November 7.

The next cleanup date is planned for Saturday, May 2, 2009 from 8:45 to 10:00 am.  If you would like to pitch in and join the fun, meet at the eastern parking lot of Mel McKay park in South Rock Island at 8:45. Call Dave Renneke at 786-5247 if you need directions. At the park we will divide into two-person teams, receive instructions, put on a safety vest, and grab a trash bag. Please bring your own gloves and wear long pants and sturdy shoes.

Thanks to everyone who is helping to make this a more beautiful place to live!

The City of Rock Island provided an appreciation breakfast at 9:00 am on Saturday, August 11, 2007, for all volunteers who help in the Adopt-A-Highway program.  The breakfast was held at Sunset Marina.  Here is a picture of the certificate that we received on that day.
